Barbican Art Gallery

The House of Viktor and Rolf

This spectacular installation at the Barbican Art Gallery showcased the work of avant-garde fashion designers Viktor and Rolf.

Over 100 production drawings were created to help Siebe Tettero Architects develop the concept of the 6 metre high dolls house, which took centre stage at the exhibition.

Structural calculations were produced from the technical drawings. The architectural features of the dolls house were produced to scale using CNC machining. The exhibition structure was completed with an airless spray paint finish which provided a smooth and rich gleam when lit.

The exhibition, and in particular the dolls house, was a success for the Barbican and another noteworthy achievement for Benchworks. It is a testament to the team’s skills to make materials like MDF and emulsion paint look anything but ordinary when processed in knowledgeable and skilful ways.

We were commissioned to dismantle the dolls house structure and all other exhibition elements for storage and re-use. The House of Viktor and Rolf exhibition was procured by the Centraal Museum, Utrecht, The Netherlands who engaged us to survey their gallery, make a number of modifications and re-install in their museum.
