Big Bang requires the viewer to pass through six doorways built into stage-set like walls. After passing through the final wall and turning to look back, a massive and intricate bomb blast pattern looms in front of the spectator.
For the full effect to work, the setting out of the blast holes in each wall was critical, as was the placement of the walls within the gallery space.
This project required us to produce blast hole shape samples for artist’s approval and obtain permissions from Building Control and Safety Officers for the structures. As the visiting public had access directly to the piece, and typical permanent fixing to the building fabric was prohibited, this was not straightforward.
Our technical drawings, risk assessments and installation method statements enabled the authorities to approve the structure quickly. From the same documentation Gabriel Lester was confident that when complete the piece would match his high expectations.
